Since 2017, Club Randomania has been exploring Morocco's natural landscapes with a simple belief: responsible ecotourism is not just about following existing trails, it can also create new ones — as long as it is done with local communities, not in their place.
This belief gave birth to the Pioneer Routes : since 2021, our team has been installing identification plaques on Moroccan summits that never had one, in partnership with local residents and guesthouses. Four summits now bear this mark. Here is their story.
1. Bab n'Ouayad (2804 m) — the first plaque, born in Imilchil
It all began in Imilchil, in partnership with the village youth and the Chez Bassou inn. Bab n'Ouayad became the first Moroccan summit to receive an identification plaque installed by Randomania. It has since become one of the most photographed viewpoints in the region, thanks to its panorama over Lake Tislit — “the bride”, according to the local legend of the lovers Isli and Tislit, which inspired the Imilchil engagement festival.
2. Jbel Aroudane (3359 m) — the second plaque, in the heart of Zaouiat Ahansal
On March 28, 2021, a joint Randomania and local team reached the summit of Jbel Aroudane after a demanding climb: more than 1,600 metres of elevation gain over 6.5 km, through snow, ice and violent wind. The club's second plaque was installed in partnership with the Dar Ahansal guesthouse in Zaouiat Ahansal.
3. Jbel Timghazine (3157 m) — the third plaque, in legendary Taghia
On June 27, 2021, we headed to the village of Taghia, a jewel of the central High Atlas known for its dizzying canyons. More than 1,100 metres of elevation gain later, Randomania's third pioneer plaque was installed, in collaboration with Gîte Amil and the villagers.
4. Jbel Messder-Idde — the loop is closed, back to Imilchil
On July 2, 2023, the team returned to Imilchil to install its fourth plaque, this time overlooking Lake Isli — “the groom”, the counterpart of Lake Tislit. The legend comes full circle: the two lovers of the Imilchil legend each have their own summit, their own plaque, their own lake.
Why it matters
Few hiking clubs do this work. Installing an identification plaque is not planting a flag: it means documenting a place, making it easy to find for future hikers, and above all building a lasting relationship with the residents and guesthouses that make each climb possible — Chez Bassou, Dar Ahansal, Gîte Amil, and so many others who have supported us.
Explore. Map. Promote. Pass on. That is the promise of Randomania's Pioneer Routes — and the story is still being written.
